What is preconception counseling?

While many women visit the obstetrician for the first time after they become pregnant, it’s always a good idea to talk with Dr. Richards when you first start thinking about trying for a baby to promote a healthy pregnancy before you conceive. During a preconception counseling visit, Dr. Richards provides advice for maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout your pregnancy to improve your chances of having a complication-free pregnancy and delivering a healthy baby.

You may receive prenatal vitamins and other suggestions to increase both your chances of conceiving and for carrying a healthy baby to full term.

What testing is done during preconception counseling visits?

Your preconception counseling visit may consist of screening tests for factors that could affect your baby during pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, thyroid issues, diabetes, or STDs. Your doctor also reviews your family history to determine risks for genetic disorders, mental disorders, or congenital disabilities.

What should I expect at my first prenatal appointment?

Your first appointment after conception is probably your longest one for the duration of your pregnancy. A pregnancy test or ultrasound is performed to confirm the pregnancy. Then, if you haven’t completed preconception counseling, your family history is taken during this appointment to determine your overall level of health and what problems you may encounter during your pregnancy. Your estimated due date is determined during this visit.

The first prenatal visit is usually scheduled between 8 and 10 weeks gestation. The visit consists of a physical exam, including a pelvic exam, pap smear, blood work, and breast exam. Your blood pressure and weight are measured, and your urine is screened for protein and sugar.
