Darin Swainston, MD, FACOG provides robotic-assisted hysterectomy for patients in the Las Vegas and Summerlin areas. Hysterectomy Q & A

What is a hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove the uterus. There are a few different types of hysterectomy based on the structures removed:

  • Total hysterectomy, which involves removal of both the uterus and the cervix
  • Supracervical (partial) hysterectomy, in which Dr. Swainston removes the uterus but the cervix remains

What conditions does a hysterectomy treat?

A myriad of conditions can be managed or treated by removal of the uterus and sometimes supporting structures, including:

  • Endometriosis
  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Uterine precancer or cancer
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine growths
  • Cervical dysplasia
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • Pain with sex
  • Problems with Essure

After a hysterectomy, the patient can no longer sustain a pregnancy. For this reason, hysterectomy is often only used in young women when all other options have failed, or the benefits are greater than the risks.

What is single-site umbilical hysterectomy?

During a single-site umbilical hysterectomy, Dr. Swainston removes the uterus and other structures through a small incision in the umbilicus or belly button. This allows for an approach that is cosmetically pleasing, and these procedures are done outpatient so patients don’t require hospitalization. Dr. Swainston provides this innovative procedure using state-of-the-art equipment at his practice. Surgeons have traveled from all over America to learn this technique from Dr. Swainston.

What other ways can a doctor perform a hysterectomy?

Other doctors perform a hysterectomy through the vagina, through a large incision in the abdomen, or through three small laparoscopic incisions in the abdomen. All of these procedures have major disadvantages compared to the robotic-assisted hysterectomy.

What are the benefits of hysterectomy?

The most significant benefit of hysterectomy is alleviation of the condition, signs, or symptoms that were plaguing the patient. Following a hysterectomy, menstruation ceases.

Who is a good candidate for a hysterectomy?

The best candidates for hysterectomy surgery:

  • Are diagnosed with a condition that can be effectively managed or treated through hysterectomy
  • Don't plan to have more children
  • Are in good health; are likely to recover well from surgery

What are the risks of surgery?

Risks associated with hysterectomy include fever, infection, bleeding, injury to nearby organs, blood clots, and problems related to anesthesia. Women who have other medical conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes, are at increased risk of complications from surgery. Single-site umbilical hysterectomies are associated with a better cosmetic result but do increase the risk of an umbilical hernia.
