Essure Removal Q & A

What is Essure?

Essure is a soft, flexible insert that’s set into each of your fallopian tubes. Scar tissue forms around the insert, creating a barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the eggs for fertilization. Essure placement is a noninvasive procedure and the implant is non-hormonal, making it an attractive birth control option for many women. It offers 99% protection against pregnancy.

Is Essure a safe option of birth control?

Although Essure is FDA approved, the organization does warn against its multiple, possible complications. Many women have experienced pain that lingers after the initial implantation of the birth control. Other complications include:

  • Headaches
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Hemorrhage
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Extreme fatigue

In some cases, complications occur when the implant is improperly placed. The outer coil of Essure is made from a nickel mix, which may trigger an allergy in some women.

Due to declining sales of Essure, distribution of the birth control implant will discontinue in the U.S. as of December 2018.

Who should have Essure removed?

If you’re experiencing unusual symptoms since you’ve had Essure implanted, visit Dr. Swainston for an evaluation. He can help determine if your symptoms can be attributed to the birth control device or another medical reason.

Removing Essure is likely to resolve any symptoms you have that are associated with the device.

How is Essure removed?

Dr. Darin Swainston is trained in robotic gynecological surgery and can effectively remove your Essure device if necessary. The initial insertion of Essure is performed vaginally and doesn’t require anesthesia.

Removal, however, does require minor surgery and general anesthesia. The surgery involves removing all components of the device and any coil fragments. Dr. Swainston works gently through the scar tissue that formed in your fallopian tubes around the device. As it is surgery, you will need a small incision in the bikini line that measures two to four inches long, and you should recover within five to seven days.

Your fertility is not restored with the removal of the Essure device; your fallopian tubes remain unattached from your uterus.
